I am beyond excited to share with you all a significant milestone in my academic journey: the publication of my first scientific paper in the MDPI Big Data and Cognitive Computing Magazine! As someone deeply passionate about the fields of computer science, this accomplishment is not only a testament to my dedication, but also a realization of a long-time goal. In this blog post, I’d like to share the story behind my research and the path that led to this achievement.
The Research
The paper, titled “Parallelization Strategies for Graph-Code-Based Similarity Search,” explores the potential of scalability of Similarity Search in Multimedia Information Retrieval (MMIR). Based on the previous works of my co-authors, we could scale the processing of the search nearly linearly on Graphic Processing Units (GPUs).
The Inspiration
The motivation behind my research began with a simple question: “How can Graph Code algorithms be parallelized?” This was simply the topic of my Master’s Thesis, which I started back in 2021. My fascination for computers, which are running big number-crunching tasks, contributed to the story. On the other hand, the IT world is a large contributor to global CO2 emissions, which also demands energy-efficient solutions for software and algorithms.
The Journey
Embarking on this academic endeavour was not without its challenges. I spent countless hours poring over relevant literature, experimenting with various methodologies, and refining my ideas. Along the way, I was fortunate to receive invaluable guidance from my mentors and colleagues, who helped me navigate the intricacies of the research process. The road to publication had some setbacks and revisions, but it was also an incredibly rewarding experience that taught me perseverance and the importance of staying focused on my goals.
The Future
The publication of my first scientific paper is just the beginning of my journey in the world of academics. I continued with my PhD studies, exploring the intersection of MMIR and the Metaverse (or specifically massively multiplayer online games). As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, I am excited to contribute to the ongoing conversation and help shape the future of the Metaverse, MMIR and maybe more.
In Conclusion
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my work with the world through MDPI Big Data and Cognitive Computing Magazine. The experience has been nothing short of transformative, and I am eager to see where this journey takes me next. I hope that my research will inspire others to delve into the fascinating world of computer science, and I look forward to continuing my exploration and sharing my findings with all of you.
