Google Maps Earth View – Was soll man damit?

Seit Anfang letzter Woche hat Google ein neues Feature für Google Maps released. Letztendlich ist dieser Schritt meiner Meinung nach schon sehr lange fällig. Schließlich hat Google die Browser Erweiterung von Google Earth bereits im Frühjahr 2008 veröffentlicht. Zugegeben, die damalige ziemlich instabile (natürlich) Beta Version war noch nicht für die Masse geeignet, dennoch hätte ich gedacht, das die Integration in Google Maps schon nach kurzer Zeit erfolgen würde. Nun sind ja einige Tage ins Land gezogen und ich habe vermutet, dass der Hype um HTML5 und WebGL Google dazu bewegen wird, das Plugin auf diese Standards zu portieren. Scheinbar möchte man aber das Plugin, welches eine Installation voraussetzt, trotzdem auf die Maps Benutzer loslassen. Ich persönlich weiß noch nicht genau ob es Sinn macht, die Maps Inhalte in 3D darzustellen. Sicher ist es nett wenn zu etwas 3D Modelle da sind, aber die meisten Städte sind ja nicht als…

In fact, I don’t think we need a multi-machine solution for the common case at all. We need software that can scale up with today’s hardware. 37signals likes to run boxes with half a terabyte of RAM. Are we there yet with MySQL and InnoDB? No. Postgres? No. Anything open-source? Not that I know of. We’ve got database software that can only do a fraction of what it should be able to on that size of server.” Da kann ich nur zustimmen. Unser kleiner Service snoovel.com arbeitet auf einer einzigen Maschine, was durch eher geringen Benutzerzahlen auch sinnvoll ist. Dennoch gibt es schon Performance-Probleme. Da fängt man tatsächlich an über Parallelisierung nachzudenken, ohne das man die Anwendung und Datenbanken durch den Profiler jagt und optimiert.

The Tour Director enable anybody to create guided tour in an easy way, like making movies. Snoovel’s Guided Tours gives you the possibility to tell a story. You can mashup videos, pictures, text and Geo-Stuff from Google Earth – in one window. In my mind it is a very cool feature, better then the tours from Google Earth, because you can assamble a geo-movie with scenes and tours. You can change views and cameramovements with ease. Snoovel Channel (UPDATE)

Heute haben wir die MySnoovel Channels released. Damit kann man Tracks oder Tours von Snoovel auf seine Webseite einbinden. Hier eine kleine Kostprobe (Leider nur für Windows User :(( ) UPDATE: Danke Google, ab heute auch für Mac User!! :)

Get terrain altitude of Google Earth with GEP

You can use snoovel to share your tracks with the world. There are two ways to create a track, use a GPS record or create a route manually. For the second way we use a click listener to capture clicks on the globe. A click returns latitude and longitude coordinates, but no altitude value. This is not a big problem to display the route, because you can set “ALTITUDE_MODE_RELATIVE_TO_GROUND”. But we generate an elevation profile based upon the track. Finally we found the method getGroundOverlay in the class GeGlobe. (getGroundOverlay) Returns the altitude for a given location on the globe. If the altitude data for the location has not yet been loaded, the return value is 0. This method delivers us the altitude values, fine. Endlich eine Ankündigung – Snoovel.de

Nach vielen Stunden Arbeit und daraus resultierender Blog-Abwesenheit kann ich dieses Blog endlich dazu benutzen, etwas anzukündigen! :) Durch einige Projekte habe ich mich beruflich mittlerweile sehr viel mit Google Earth und dem Google Earth Browser Plugin beschäftigt. Aus diesen Erfahrungen und vielen anderen Ideen haben wir in den letzten Monaten das Portal snoovel erschaffen. Snoovel verwendet das Google Earth Plugin um Webinhalte und Geodaten zu vereinen. Interessant sind zum einen die “Guided Tours“, die dem Besucher eine neue Möglichkeit geben, sich Inhalte in Google Earth präsentieren zu lassen. Die Tour übernimmt die Kamerasteuerung von Google Earth und erlaubt es den Betrachter eine neue Dimension des 3D Webs zu erleben: Durch die vorgefertigten Bewegungen können sogar Teile des Inneren eines Gebäudes gezeigt werden, was sonst nur mit speziellen Eingabegeräten möglich ist.
